Tim Rathmann Joins SCS Engineers’ CCUS Practice

February 27, 2025

SCS Engineers welcomes Tim Rathmann, who has over two decades of extensive deep well production and injection expertise in the petroleum sector, including carbon capture and underground storage (CCUS) technology. The petroleum sector, or the oil and gas industry, seeks to invest in CCUS to help maintain energy security and transition to using carbon sequestration and class VI wells to lower carbon footprints. Although these methods are EPA-approved, the transition takes time, and to be sustainable, planning and collaboration among all stakeholders are necessary to move forward.

“Many people have industry expertise, but we look for individuals, like Tim, who have federal, state, and local regulatory experience related to the petroleum industry – that provides real value for our clients and keeps projects moving and the public informed,” says Jim Ritchie, vice president at SCS.

Rathmann brings regulatory expertise and hands-on experience designing and modeling CCUS solutions to meet permitting and regulatory applications. This information is valuable because it demonstrates the science and care behind developing a petroleum project’s robust safety needs that meet business goals and the needs of the public.

“Tim has a successful record in reservoir modeling, subsurface evaluations, and regulatory applications, assisting clients in getting all required permits,” says Monte Markley, senior vice president at SCS.

Success comes with experience supporting global oil and gas operators and multiple firms across the U.S. Rathmann understands how to implement Underground Injection (UIC) while protecting drinking water supplies. He brings extensive experience in performing geoscience evaluations, permitting, plugging, and decommissioning legacy oil and gas wells and offshore platforms in the U.S.

His most recent work on renewable projects in California includes underground gas storage and the proposed offshore wind farms off the coast of Morro Bay and Humboldt. He understands the value of using specialized drones from SCS RMC to create mapping and geoscience efficiencies.

As a Senior Project Manager at SCS, Rathmann will perform as team/operations leader, geoscientist, environmental engineer, project manager, and regulatory specialist while providing colleagues with information technology support and mentorship/training. His in-depth industrial knowledge and ability to contribute to permits for underground storage, which often align with growing state renewable energy goals, make him a strong asset to multiple practices at SCS Engineers.
