Hanover County’s landfill has always been environmentally progressive, and that trend continues. Landfills, especially in areas of growth, often make good brownfield sites – perfect for remediation for new uses. The land typically has the infrastructure in place, and with planning by environmental experts who know landfill systems can become almost anything. Around the country, many are converted to parks and recreational sites, such as New York City’s Fresh Kills Landfill, which is now Freshkills Park. Others become mixed-use housing, transportation or logistics hubs, and even indoor ski slopes.
