The International Solid Waste Association’s Working Group on Landfill (WGL) elected Adedeji (Deji) Fawole as the new Vice-Chair. In this new role, he continues WGL’s support to industry and developing nations on landfills’ design, construction, regulation, and management. Deji also continues as an Advisory Board Member of the ISWA African Regional Chapter and Senior Project Manager for SCS Engineers.
“Being elected to the Vice Chair position of the WGL is a monumental achievement for me. The immense support of SCS Engineers and my colleagues throughout my almost 30 years at SCS has been instrumental in my professional development and serving in this new role. I’m looking forward to utilizing my knowledge to advance sustainable landfill development with the Working Group and representing SCS on the international stage,” states Deji Fawole.
The WGL produces highly valuable research, papers, reports for international use, and ISWA World Congress presentations. Many publications on the ISWA website address modern landfill design and methane emissions, among other salient landfill topics.
Deji Fawole uses his significant North American experience in solid waste engineering projects, covering site and geotechnical investigations, design, management, CQA, constructability reviews, engineering cost estimates, construction of landfills, waste transfer stations, and landfill gas capture and control.
He has been involved in international projects, including dumpsite closure designs in Nigeria and project assignments under the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Global Methane Initiative (GMI) and Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in Nigeria, Ghana, and Ethiopia. His assignments have included the evaluation of solid waste management practices, including waste collection and disposal; technical assessments of waste disposal sites, the feasibility of a landfill gas project; and assistance with the evaluation of a new landfill site) and technical training on integrated solid waste management.
James Law says: “As the President of ISWA and a longtime colleague at SCS, I am very happy that the WGL elected Deji to the Vice-Chair position. It is an important position for the WGL because he needs to assist the Chair, Rene Rosendal, in all activities, especially when he is absent to represent Rene at the Scientific Technical Committee (STC). Deji has vast knowledge and experience in landfill design, operations and management, remediation and monitoring and will add great value to the WGL activities in the Global South developing nations.”
